Popular Cities for Expats

Egypt has several cities popular with foreigners, each with a very different vibe and cost of living:

Hurghada

The most popular destination for Russian-speaking and European expats. A resort city on the Red Sea with great weather year-round.

Best Areas

  • El Kawther — central, walkable, lots of shops and restaurants. Mid-range pricing
  • El Mamsha (tourist promenade) — upscale, seafront living, higher prices
  • El Ahyaa — quieter, more residential, good value
  • El Dahar (downtown) — cheapest, most "local Egyptian" feel, chaotic but authentic
  • Sahl Hasheesh — luxury resort area south of Hurghada, premium pricing

Typical Rent

  • Studio/1BR in El Dahar: $150-250/month
  • 1BR in El Kawther: $250-400/month
  • 2BR in El Mamsha: $400-700/month
  • Villa in Sahl Hasheesh: $1,000-3,000/month

Cairo

The megacity. Chaotic, loud, but endlessly fascinating. Best for those who want culture, nightlife, and career opportunities.

Best Areas for Expats

  • Maadi — green, quiet, large expat community, international schools. Mid-to-high range
  • Zamalek — island district, upscale, walkable, great restaurants and cafes
  • New Cairo / Fifth Settlement — modern compounds, malls, feels like a different country
  • 6th of October City — affordable, spacious, but far from central Cairo
  • Downtown Cairo — cheap, central, noisy, not for everyone

Typical Rent

  • 1BR in Downtown: $200-350/month
  • 1BR in Maadi: $350-600/month
  • 2BR in Zamalek: $500-900/month
  • 3BR in New Cairo compound: $800-1,500/month

Sharm El Sheikh

Another Red Sea resort town, popular with divers and those seeking a quieter resort life. Smaller expat community than Hurghada.

Typical Rent

  • 1BR apartment: $200-400/month
  • 2BR with sea view: $400-800/month

Alexandria

Mediterranean city with a European feel. Cooler climate, great seafood, rich history. Growing digital nomad scene.

Typical Rent

  • 1BR apartment: $150-300/month
  • 2BR sea-view: $300-600/month

How to Choose

  • Beach + warm weather year-round → Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh
