Opening a Bank Account in Egypt as a Foreigner
Which banks accept foreigners, what documents you need, and how to get a debit card for everyday use.
Do You Need a Local Bank Account?
You can survive in Egypt without a local bank account โ cash is king, and most places accept it. However, a local account is useful for:
- Receiving local bank transfers (rent deposits, freelance payments)
- Online shopping on Egyptian websites
- Paying utility bills
- Getting better exchange rates for large amounts
- Using local payment apps (InstaPay, Fawry)
For daily expenses, many expats simply use their international Visa/Mastercard or withdraw cash from ATMs.
Best Banks for Foreigners
- CIB (Commercial International Bank) โ most foreigner-friendly, English-speaking staff, good mobile app
- QNB (Qatar National Bank) โ accepts foreigners easily, decent app
- Banque Misr โ state bank, found everywhere, but more bureaucratic
- National Bank of Egypt (NBE) โ largest bank, English support available
CIB is the most recommended for expats. Their branches in tourist areas are used to dealing with foreigners.
Requirements
Requirements vary by bank, but generally you need:
- Passport with valid visa or residence permit
- Proof of address: rental contract or utility bill
- Minimum deposit: typically 1,000-5,000 EGP ($20-100 USD)
- Egyptian phone number: required for SMS verification
- Some banks may ask for a letter from your employer or proof of income
Having a residence permit (plastic card) makes the process much easier. Some banks may refuse to open an account with just a tourist visa.
Process
- Visit a bank branch (preferably in a tourist area for better English support)
- Bring all documents and ask to open a savings account with a debit card
- Fill in the application forms
- Make the minimum deposit
- Your debit card will be ready in 3-7 business days
- Return to pick up the card and set your PIN
The whole process takes about 1-2 hours at the branch.
Tips
- Download the bank's mobile app immediately โ you'll need it for transfers and checking balance
- ATM withdrawal limits are typically 5,000-10,000 EGP per transaction
- International transfers to/from Egyptian accounts can be slow (3-5 business days)
- Consider keeping a USD account alongside your EGP account for stability
